Crossy Road – Endless Arcade Hopper is the reason why Windows Phone can’t have nice things. The deluge of cheap copies of popular iOS and Android titles that are rapidly dumped on to the Store without curation poison the water, so industrious developers feel the market for their original idea is already ruined before they have time to release it.
Hipster Whale’s Crossy Road was, for many, one of mobile gaming's highlights of 2014. This ‘remake’ / ‘homage’ / ‘rip-off’ takes the original's name, store icon, and even evokes the developer and its accolades in the description, before subjecting you to a poor imitation of the game.
This quick cash in lacks any of the isometric pixel charm and character of the original, instead replacing it with cheap lo-fi polygons in the Unity Engine. The single chicken character towers over the green and yellow cars which cruise back and forth down the bland roads.
It gets worse though, the landscape never changes. Unlike the wonderful original, which randomly generated its levels, here all you do is hop forward through its looping environment.
But the way it looks is only endemic of a bigger problem. Rather than the subtle swipe controls that had you hopping left and right to find your way through the course and collect coins on the 'real' game, the Windows Phone rip-off just has you moving in a single direction forward down the monotonous course by tapping the screen.
Do not download Crossy Road – Endless Arcade Hopper on Windows Phone. Do not support this studio’s plagiarism of a modern classic. It’s not good, and you are only encouraging other developers to follow suit in stealing from more talented people and removing any incentive for Window Store to properly police their marketplace.
Go and buy an iOS or Android device and grab the original there.
